He has been empanelled for promotion as Additional Secretary at the Centre
Indications are he might opt for Central posting
HYDERABAD: I. V. Subba Rao, Chief Electoral Officer, who earned laurels from various quarters for conducting the elections in a free and fair manner, is likely to shift to the Centre.
The senior IAS officer, who is now a Principal Secretary in the State government, has been empanelled by the Union government for promotion as Additional Secretary at the Centre.
The Union government will shortly ask him to indicate his options — whether he would like to continue in Andhra Pradesh or move over to the Centre. Indications were available on Saturday that Mr. Rao might opt for a posting at the Centre. When contacted, Mr. Subba Rao, however, said he was yet to apply his mind on the issue.
The decision to empanel him comes two days after the Rajasekhara Reddy government shifted A. K. Mohanty as Director-General of Police and three other IPS officers. As a result, both the top officials chosen by the Election Commission to conduct the elections, would have left in quick succession. Sources said Mr. Rao, whose hard work made the just-concluded elections a distinct chapter in the State’s electoral history, was anguished at the speed and timing of the transfer of the police officers, though the elected government could take whatever decision it liked.
Publication of bookMr. Rao is presently pre-occupied with publication of a book being brought out on the success story of the 2009 general elections in Andhra Pradesh.
