TIRUPATI: Praja Rajya president Chiranjeevi on Sunday wrapped up his four-day campaign in Chittoor district on a strong note queering up the pitch of his attack on his main political opponents – Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy and TDP chief N. Chandrababu Naidu.

In a hard-hitting speech, he charged that Dr. Reddy was steeped ‘neck-deep’ in corruption and alleged that he was managing to silence the party high command with his ‘ill-gotten wealth’.

In an oblique dig at Ms. Sonia Gandhi for turning a Nelson’s eye towards what he called Dr. Reddy’s corrupt practices, he said that had it been Indira Gandhi, the Chief Minister would have been shown his place and dumped long back.

He alleged that the Congress rule in the State is plagued with financial and administrative irregularities and ineptitude resulting in failure of law and order, price control mechanism, social security apparatus, NREGP scheme, medical and health machinery. It was in this context that he held out a promise to the people of the State to provide good and efficient governance if people vote him to power.

Strongly indicating that he is pinning hopes on the youth, obviously taking cue from their massive turnouts at all his meetings, Chiru told them: “Believe me, with your help I will hound out the corrupt elements and establish good governance in the State.”

Training his guns on Mr. Naidu, he called him a ‘power-monger’, who he alleged would stoop to any level to grab power. He cited as an example as how Mr Naidu moved heaven and earth to befriend his one-time foes, the Left parties. He questioned the propriety of the Left parties throwing their lot behind Mr. Naidu.

Mr. Chiranjeevi earlier addressed a press conference at Chittoor where he said that the PR was not averse to having an alliance with the TRS. He however hastened to add that he would not go begging for the alliance.

He covered nearly a dozen places spread over four constituencies - Chittoor, Puthalpet, Puttur and Nagari before winding up his extensive campaign and left for Chennai late in the night.

‘Praja Ballot’

On the second day of the ‘Praja Ballot’ on the proposed levying of tax on garbage, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Sunday collected the opinion of public from 100 residential areas across the city. The ballot would be continued on Monday too.

Praja Rajyam leader’s promise

Rajahmundry: J.V.S. Murthy, co-convener of PRP, has declared that he will devote full time to politics from Republic Day.

Addressing a huge gathering from East and West Godavari districts on Sunday, Lt. Murthy said he had rendered selfless service in the Army for more than 15 years. “I want wants to do the same for the people of the two districts,” he said, and added that the principles of party founder Chiranjeevi attracted him the most.
