Chiru warns partymen

Time for everyone to get down to business: Chiru

‘Take up contact programmes as told by State panel’

HYDERABAD: Praja Rajyam president K. Chiranjeevi said on Tuesday that the party high command would not brook dissidence and reminded district committee members that the need of the hour was for them to work together.

At the first meeting for Visakhapatnam (Urban & Rural), Chittoor, Ranga Reddy and Hyderabad convened here since the district committees were formed, he said it was time for everyone in the PR to get down to business. “We have very little time before the elections. We know that people are looking for change and all they need is just a little push to help them take the decision,” he told party leaders.

Mr. Chiranjeevi urged them to take up people-contact programmes as prescribed by the State committee. He said the programmes would be titled ‘Gadapa Gadapaku Praja Rajyam, Gunde Gundelo Praja Rajyam’ (Praja Rajyam at every doorstep and Praja Rajyam in every heart).

Goodwill

He reminded them that there was so much goodwill for the PR in the people, as was in evidence at his public appearances and asked them not to relax.

“You are the bridge between the party and the people, so get close to them and motivate them to vote out the Congress and the Telugu Desam,” he said. Senior leader Ch. Harirama Jogaiah said that by the month-end, committees would be in place at the Assembly constituency level. He said henceforth, from the district, Assembly constituency and down to the mandal-level, committee members needed to strictly follow a schedule to be chalked out and communicated to them by the State committee.

There were too many reports of people individually taking up programmes on their own, he said.

ONGOLE: Tension gripped Singarayakonda where an engineering student attacked a girl student for not responding to his overtures and jumped off the college building in a bid to commit suicide. Both of them were admitted to hospital.

According to police, Hemavanth Reddy (20) was studying second year B.Tech in Malineni Lakshmaiah College of Engineering at Singarayakonda. He fell in love with Sravanthi, who is studying third year B.Tech in the same college. Both of them belonged to nearby Ulavapadu village.

Hemavanth has been after Sravanthi to accept his love for the last four months. Sravanthi brought her plight to the notice of her parents who counselled her to be patient. She informed them on Monday night that Hemavanth was crossing the limits.

Meanwhile, Hemavanth came to know that Sravanthi was getting married soon. He encountered her in the college on Tuesday morning and made a last ditch effort to win her over.

As she flatly refused his proposal, the enraged Hemavanth attacked her with a blade causing a slit on her right neck.

Some students who noticed the attack tried to nab him. But Hemavanth ran away and jumped off the first floor of the college building and broke his spinal chord.

The college management rushed Sravanthi, who was bleeding in neck, to a private hospital at Kandukur and Hemavanth to a hospital in Ongole. Sravanthi is recovering from the trauma. Hemavanth was referred to Guntur for better medical aid. Police registered a case.

Second incident

As she raised an alarm, the youth fled the scene and she was taken to the general hospital.

Her parents Venkatesh and Padmavathamma, were away when she was attacked as they had taken her sibling to a doctor.

One Town Inspector K. Rajeswar Reddy registered a case and a hunt is on for the miscreants.

Protests against ‘inept’ handling of the acute water problem by the government

ELURU: Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) activists on Wednesday laid siege to the Collectorate here seeking urgent measures to protect the standing crop in the rabi that came under serious threat in view of acute shortage of water in the Godavari.

A large number of people owing allegiance to the PRP, mostly from the delta areas, reached the Collectorate to express their resentment on the alleged inept handling of the problem by the government.

‘No commitment’

PRP district convener K.P.N. Satyaprasad alleged that the government lacked commitment in helping the farmers tide over the water crisis.

He criticised that the administration was managing to bring in additional water from the tributaries of the Godavari on an ad hoc basis only to please Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ahead of his visit to West Godavari district.

The PRP leader demanded sustained efforts from the government to save the crops.

Group rivalry

The PRP organised the protest to mark the assuming of charge by Mr. Satyaprasad as party district convener. The function held in this connection was marred by lawlessness and group rivalries.

A boisterous crowd surged onto the dais and created a din, disrupting the proceedings.

Mr. Satyaprasad found it not conducive to deliver his address for well over an hour as sloganeering by the protesting rival groups off the dais continued for long. The free-for-all scenes invited police interference several times to restore order.

Invite for marriage sent on couple’s son’s name

Twosome: Yuva Rajyam president Pawan Kalyan with wife Renu

HYDERABAD: Film star Pawan Kalyan married Renu Desai at a simple function at his residence here on Wednesday.

Only close family members, including his brothers -- Praja Rajyam president K. Chiranjeevi and K. Nagababu -- attended the wedding which was performed at 9.50 a.m. according to Arya Samaj traditions.

This is the second marriage for Mr. Kalyan who was involved in a stormy divorce case with his first wife Nandini in a court in Visakhapatnam recently.

The actor had paid a huge sum of money towards settlement of the marriage dispute a few months ago.

Mr. Kalyan and Ms. Renu have a five-year-year old son, Akira. Quite interestingly, the wedding card was sent to select invitees in their son’s name.

It said “Akira invites you to his parents’ wedding -- Kalyan weds Renu -- at our residence with the blessings of all the elders and the love of youngsters”.

Sources in Praja Rajyam said that though Mr. Kalyan and Ms. Renu had been living together for quite sometime, the wedding was aimed at stopping criticism by political rivals against this arrangement.

The actor has plunged into campaigning for the party ever since he became Yuva Rajyam president.
