| Protests against ‘inept’ handling of the acute water problem by the government |
In protest mode: PRP activists laying siege to the Collectorate in Eluru on Wednesday. — ELURU: Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) activists on Wednesday laid siege to the Collectorate here seeking urgent measures to protect the standing crop in the rabi that came under serious threat in view of acute shortage of water in the Godavari.
A large number of people owing allegiance to the PRP, mostly from the delta areas, reached the Collectorate to express their resentment on the alleged inept handling of the problem by the government.
‘No commitment’PRP district convener K.P.N. Satyaprasad alleged that the government lacked commitment in helping the farmers tide over the water crisis.
He criticised that the administration was managing to bring in additional water from the tributaries of the Godavari on an ad hoc basis only to please Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ahead of his visit to West Godavari district.
The PRP leader demanded sustained efforts from the government to save the crops.
Group rivalryThe PRP organised the protest to mark the assuming of charge by Mr. Satyaprasad as party district convener. The function held in this connection was marred by lawlessness and group rivalries.
A boisterous crowd surged onto the dais and created a din, disrupting the proceedings.
Mr. Satyaprasad found it not conducive to deliver his address for well over an hour as sloganeering by the protesting rival groups off the dais continued for long. The free-for-all scenes invited police interference several times to restore order.
