Chiranjeevi lashes out at YSR, Naidu

Special Correspondent

TIRUPATI: On the penultimate day of his four-day extensive road show in Chittoor district, Praja Rajyam president K. Chiranjeevi, on Saturday, lashed out at Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy and TDP president N. Chandrababu Naidu.

Apparently stung by his two major rivals repeatedly dubbing him a political novice and a non-entity, he took pot-shots at them amid loud cheers from the crowd which milled around his vehicle.

In an oblique reference to the ‘faction culture’ of the Congress bigwigs from the Rayalaseema region, Mr. Chiranjeevi agreed that he was a novice as far as the faction culture was concerned as he depended only on hard work, honesty, sincerity and courage of conviction.

He then went on to recall how thousands got hacked to death in the unending faction feuds in the region leaving young women languish as widows for life even as their children turned orphans. .

He also did not agree that the sops and schemes he announced during the course of his campaign are ‘populist’ and insisted they were ‘social imperatives’ necessary to address the problems of the poor.

Turning his ire at Mr. Naidu, the PR leader said it was an irony that Mr. Naidu, who had undermined late N.T. Rama Rao’s most cherished policies such as the Rs. 2-a-kg rice scheme and total prohibition for his own narrow political gains, should now eulogise NTR’s noble qualities and vision.

Three constituencies

Mr. Chiranjeevi was on a whistle-stop campaign in the district covering three constituencies — Punganur, Piler and Puthalpet.
