Praja Rajyam submits memo to Collector on common symbol

Tomato bath outside House
Praja Rajyam activists dump lorry load of the vegetable outside Assembly gate

Protest over governments callous attitude in solving farmers problems

Happens so fast and in a dramatic fashion that police were caught unawares

Unique protest: Praja Rajyam activists dumping tomatoes on the main road in front of the State Assembly in Hyderabad on Thursday in support of tomato farmers.

HYDERABAD: Farmers from Chittoor district and Praja Rajyam activists dumped a lorry load of the tomatoes outside the Legislative Assembly gate to draw attention on the farmers problems.

They were protesting at the government s callous attitude in solving farmers problems while claiming to be farmer friendly Referring to the arguments of Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy and Opposition Leader N. Chandrababu Naidu they said the duo was wasting precious time of the Assembly time by trading charges about each others sons.

It all happened fast and in such a dramatic fashion that the police were caught unawares. However even as the tipper stopped between the two gates leading to the Assembly and unloaded its contents two constables clambered into the cabin and ensured that the driver drove to the nearest police station.

Most of the farmers were arrested within minutes of the incident that proved to be thoroughly embarrassing for the police who had thrown a security cordon around the Assembly Earlier too police stopped people who tried to sneak baskets full of the vegetable up to the Assembly premises in autorickshaws

Among those who were arrested were the party s Media Committee chairman T. Seshnarayan vice chairman A. Rajkumar film producer Tagore B. Madhu Reddy and Sarojini of the Mahila Rajyam.

They want their plea to be taken to the notice of CEC
— Photo A.V.G. Prasad For a cause: PRP activists submit petition to Collector G. Jayalakshmi seeking common election symbol for the party in Eluru on Thursday.

ELURU: Members of the Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) district unit on Monday petitioned Collector G.Jayalakshmi seeking a common election symbol for the party in the coming general elections. They wanted the Collector to take their plea in this regard to the notice of the Chief Election Commission (CEC) of India.

The PRP district president K.P.N. Satyaprasad highlighted the need for the ECI to reconsider its earlier decision with regard to the PRP’s contention for a common symbol. The Commission has decided against the PRP’s plea on this score on the ground that the facility of common symbol could be extended to only recognised parties which got the previous history of contesting in the elections and meeting the ECI’s specifications in terms of securing the number of votes unlike in the case of PRP which was only a registered fledgling political outfit which was yet to face the elections.

Talking to the media, the PRP district chief however exuded confidence that the ECI would reconsider its ruling and issue a common symbol for its candidates fighting the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections in the State given its massive membership and huge turnouts attending the PRP meetings across the State. In the absence of common election symbol, confusion prevails among the voters while casting their vote as per their choice. “In one Lok Sabha seat like Eluru, the party will bear as many as eight election symbols — one for the Lok Sabha candidate and seven others for the Assembly seats in the absence of common election symbol. Think of the troubles associated with such party while electioneering for its candidates”, Dr. Satyaprasad explained. He also said the Anti-Defection Law would not be applicable to such candidates fighting the elections with different symbols from the same party in case of the defection. It may be recalled that the PRP had moved the High Court seeking a direction to the EC in favour of its demand.

First list of PR candidates by month end

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: The Praja Rajyam party’s first list of about 50 contestants for the general elections is likely to be released by the month-end.

This was disclosed by party president K. Chiranjeevi while talking to reporters here on Monday.

Asked if he would fulfil the promise of according political recognition to all sections of society while distributing party tickets, he said it was the party’s prime focus to ensure social justice.

“We are committed to it. Though this will take time, we will do our best. The general elections will just be the beginning of the process,” he stated, adding that thus far, the party had been most pro-active in announcing what it would do to different sections of people if elected to power.

As for the process to select the right candidates, party political affairs committee chairman Ch. Harirama Jogaiah said a questionnaire was being circulated to the State and district party leaders so that they could gather basic information and fill them up with their observations.

‘Defeat of Congress imminent’

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council Dadi Veerabhadra Rao has said that rampant corruption, spiralling prices and breakdown of law and order in the Sate would spell doom for the Congress in the coming elections.

Participating in the discussion on the motion of thanks on the Governor’s address on Monday, Mr.Veerabhadra Rao said that the government had failed on all fronts. With the Congress turning politics into a business to amass wealth through commissions on every project, the demand for Congress tickets was increasing, he said. CPI member Puvvada Nageswara Rao said Left parties had supported the Congress in the last elections as it wanted to keep the BJP at bay and provide political stability based on Common Minimum Programme. But the Congress went back on the CMP and gave up its non-aligned external policy.

Chiranjeevi lambasts government for ‘shortcomings’

Town wears festive look as PRP cadre celebrate

GUNTUR: It was an endless wait for most of the youth and women at the NTR Statue centre on Monday evening to catch a glimpse of Praja Rajyam Party president Chiranjeevi.

There were people dangling perilously on the flex board railings, hanging on the staircase and some simply killing time by savouring the hot ‘mirchie bajji’ and gulping cups of tea.

As the road show inched towards the venue late in the night, crowds became hysterical. Youth began to honk horns and move about in autos belting out hit numbers of Chiranjeevi. “I saw Chiranjeevi after a gap of 16 years. I will not move until I see him again,” says Ankamma Rao, a clerk in a government department. He has been waiting to see his favourite matinee idol in flesh along with his family members.

It was some 16 years ago that Chiranjeevi set the town on fire with a mammoth public gathering at the Brahmananda Reddy Stadium celebrating the 100-day run of ‘Gharana Mogudu’.

But on Monday evening, one saw an astute Chiranjeevi slowly taking centre stage. Beginning his address with trademark thanksgiving statements for the love, affection and patronage showered on him for the last 30 years, he gradually raised the pitch and launched a vitriolic attack on the government. Stating that corruption was the biggest obstacle for development, he vowed in true filmi style that he would not sleep till he rooted out corruption. Training his guns on the Chief Minister, he challenged the government to list the number of projects completed as compared to the target.

Visits chilli yard

The PRP leader also mentioned the devastating fire accident in the chilli yard and said that it was a pity that the farmers had not got their due compensation. He also mentioned about the plight of cotton farmers who were unable to sell their stocks. Each time, the actor sought popular support, the crowds became hysterical.

The whole town wore a festive look as PRP cadre painted the town white, and giant banners were put up at vintage points.

The road show wound its way through the Hindu College centre, Kankaragunta bridge, Gujjangundla , Ring Road, Koretipadu.

Mr. Chiranjeevi was accompanied by urban convener Kilaru Rosaiah and corporator Sk. Showkath.

No section of society happy with Congress: PR

Staff Reporter

NIZAMABAD: Praja Rajyam spokesperson Parakala Prabhakar has said no section of society was happy and secure with the five-year rule of the Congress. They are waiting to give a fitting lesson to the ruling party in the elections.

Since Telugu Desam Party was weak and fell to a minority, it was not in a position to dethrone the Congress and it was only the Praja Rajyam led by Chiranjeevi which was poised to come to power with two-third majority in the Assembly, he said, addressing a press conference here on Monday.

Mr. Prabhakar who was here to discuss an action plan to constitute mandal and constituency-wise committees, said that a clear picture has emerged now on the strength of political parties. The TDP was a small party and it had become even smaller after the 2004 elections as it could win only 47 seats in the Assembly despite the nine-year rule.

After the elections, the parties in ‘ Mahakootami’ would get shattered and barring TDP, the others might sail with the Congress. It would not be a surprise even if the TDP joined hands with the Congress post elections to install the UPA government at the Centre, he opined.

Earlier, the Praja Rajyam leaders took out a motorcycle rally from Madhavnagar to Viceroy Gardens here.

PRP hits back at Nani

Staff Reporter

VIJAYAWADA: The Praja Rajyam Party urban leaders on Monday took strong objection to Kesineni Nani’s comment that the PRP was selling MLA and MP nominations like cinema tickets at theatres.

PRP spokespersons G. Samaram and Gundapu Chandrasekhar said Nani was making baseless allegations displaying lack of maturity and impatience on his part over the political developments. They said Nani had more money and he could have bought the party leadership, if his charge was correct.

Addressing a press conference here, Mr. Samaram and Mr. Chandrasekhar said that it was not on the consideration of riches but on social background that Nani was given the post of convener in the PRP. Now that Nani had exposed his real attitude, the PRP leadership dismissed him forthwith and this led to Nani making all sorts of unfounded allegations against Chiranjeevi.

The PRP leaders also refuted Nani’s charge that their party was paying Rs. 1.5 lakh a month to director Posani Krishna Murali towards his making controversial comments against rival leaders of the PRP. They asked Nani to clarify if he had paid any amount to the PRP leadership for getting the post of urban convener. It was only to balance social equations that Nani was given that post and he could not maintain decorum, they added.

PR leader refutes TDP charges

PR leader refutes TDP charges

KADAPA: Praja Rajyam leader Bhooma Nagi Reddy on Sunday deplored charges of the Telugu Desam Party leaders and claimed that he strengthened the TDP in Kurnool district but the party failed to give him his due.

Mr. Nagi Reddy, State secretary C. Ramachandraiah, district PR convenor M.V. Ramana Reddy, district Mahila Rajyam president Latha Reddy and leaders M.V. Muralidhar Reddy and Maduri Pratap Reddy led a partymen’s rally from Chowdamma temple in Venkateswarapet to Venkateswara Kottala in Proddatur. Later addressing a press conference, Mr. Nagi Reddy recalled that he gave life to the TDP when Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao and Chief Minister Kotla Vijayabhaskar Reddy contested from Kurnool district. Refuting the TDP leaders’ charges that he left the TDP after enjoying significant positions, he said the party failed to give him due recognition.

‘Duping people’

Mr. Nagi Reddy dubbed the ‘Grand Alliance’ as a Mayakootami (alliance of myth) formed to dupe the people of the State for vote-catching.

TDP president N. Chandrababu Naidu would not even be able to get Opposition leader status in the Assembly after elections, as he was giving a lion’s share of Assembly seats to his alliance partners Telangana Rashtra Samiti, Communist Party of India and the CPI (M), PR Official Spokesman C. Ramachandraiah alleged.

Flaying Mr. Naidu’s remarks against PR president K. Chiranjeevi, he recalled that former Chief Minister N.T. Rama Rao never visited Secretariat until he assumed the post.

Mahila Rajyam leaders study people’s problems

Staff Reporter

VIJAYAWADA: The Mahila Rajyam leaders listed out a various problems recounted by women in both rural and urban areas during their ongoing door-to-door campaign in the Krishna district to mobilise support for Chiranjeevi-led Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) in the coming elections.

Mahila Rajyam district convener Matta Jhansi Rani said that many women were urging for prohibition to be re-imposed in the State, as they were unable to lead their families peacefully with their addicted husbands selling even utensils in home for the purpose of purchasing liquor.

The supply of drinking water once in two days, lack of proper drainage and lack of proper electricity at nights were other problems that their members came across during the campaign, she said.

Police notice to PRP on proposed tour

Large-scale preparation for first visit

Tour cut short to five days

— Photo: T. Vijaya Kumar. Mega colours: A local commercial painter giving final touches to a large cut-out of Praja Rajyam Party founder Chiranjeevi on the eve of his tour in Guntur district from Monday.

GUNTUR: Police issued specific guidelines to Praja Rajyam Party here not to conduct roadshows on National Highway No.5 while party founder Chiranjeevi travels from Mangalagiri to Guntur city on Monday on the inaugural day of his five-day visit to the district.

Making slight changes in the schedule and route of Mr. Chiranjeevi’s tour party leader Thota Chandrasekhar Rao said on Sunday that the party founder would land at the Ratnala Cheruvu site in Mangalagiri at 9.30 a.m. and conduct road show passing through all important junctions in the town and come to Guntur in the evening . He would resume his road show on the particular stretches approved by the police.

Superintendent of Police Mahesh Chandra Laddha said that party leaders have been told not to conduct road show where the density of traffic was high and on National/State Highways in the other places in the district. Massive cut-outs have been readied at all junctions in the city and flex banners are coming up on a large scale -- put up by the ticket aspirants welcoming their party leaders.

One person has gone to the extent of putting together a large party flag post at a cost of Rs.5 lakhs at Yerrabalem in Mangalagiri constituency. The enthusiasm is the highest in the Mangalagiri constituency where a large population of Kapu community is eagerly waiting for Chiranjeevi to visit their village. A sizeable population of the community in Guntur city clubbed with enthusiasm of the fans’ associations, a large gathering is expected at all places.

The exact route is undergoing a change by the minute with the aspirants influencing the organisers of the tour to take through their village so that their chances of getting a ticket was high. The district and city unit office-bearers headed by Sankrothi Rama Rao and Kilaru Roshaiah were busy with arrangements.

Praja Rajyam official spokesman Ch. Venkatramaiah went on a padayatra at Chakalipeta and HB Colony areas on Sunday as a part of the party’s interaction with people “Gadapa gadapaki Praja Rajyam.”

He criticised “Abahya Hastam,” the Rajasekhar Reddy Government’s pension scheme for aged women. He assured that belt shops would be done away if PRP was voted to power.

Chiru addresses members of 2 communities
— PHOTO : P.V. SIVAKUMAR Traditional welcome: Praja Rajyam president Chiranjeevi being welcomed with ‘purnakumbham’ by young dancers at the ’Brahmana Chaitanya’ at Kukatpally in Hyderabad on Sunday.

HYDERABAD: Praja Rajyam president K. Chiranjeevi has declared that his party would give never-before recognition in all sectors to the neglected ‘Arya Vysya’ and Brahmin communities and specifically in proportion to their population share.

He addressed a moderate gathering of the two communities at separate meetings on Sunday and said the PR held both classes of people in high esteem for their contribution to society.

At the ‘Arya Vysya Chaitanya Sadassu’ earlier in the day he spoke of the golden age during rule of the ‘Guptas’ and how from then on, even till the modern age, the Vysyas were being neglected. He cited the names of Mahatma Gandhi and Potti Sriramulu and of their pioneering contribution to society as a whole.

Referring to their abysmally-low percentage of Vysyas in Assembly and Parliament, he said the PR would give them a chance at their representation in proportion to their population.

Later in the evening, he addressed an impressive gathering at the Brahmana Chaitanya. He recalled that right since Adi Sankara, to Tanguturu Prakasam who bared his chest and braved the British bullets and down to former Prime Minister, late P.V. Narasimha Rao, the community’s contribution could not be ignored. Referring to earlier speakers, he agreed, saying it was unfortunate that a government did not allot land in the national capital for a memorial to a man like Rao, who ushered in reforms in the country.

Mr. Chiranjeevi promised that the PR would give Brahmins, the special recognition they deserved.

Praja Rajyam for total prohibition.

Praja Rajyam for total prohibition?

HYDERABAD: Praja Rajyam is seriously considering a stand in favour of imposing total prohibition in the State if elected to power.

An indication to this effect was made when party president K. Chiranjeevi said on Saturday that internally, they were already involved in the exercise of considering the different aspects of the subject and about going about it partially and in a phased manner.

He was reacting to a question from the audience at a function after making the Mahila Rajyam president Ch. Shoba Rani, executive president Dr. Vijayalakshmi and other office-bearers in the party’s women’s wing take an oath to serve the party and the people.

When a lady asked him his views of prohibition, he said the think tank was already working it out and would soon come out with an announcement.
