Chiranjeevi announces several sops to farmers

Reaching out: PRP president Chiranjeevi addressing rythu sadassu at Rajam in Srikakulam district on Saturday.

RAJAM: Praja Rajyam party founder and mega star Chiranjeevi on Saturday announced several sops for farmers.

Addressing a farmers’ convention here, he promised free power to them, assured 10 hours of power supply-five hours in the morning and five hours during night, a comprehensive crop insurance scheme, abolition of water cess, implementation of effective irrigation management system and a crisis commission to deal with any disaster.

Chiranjeevi also promised a horticulture research station at Sompeta, free power supply to salt farmers at Naupada and reservation of seats to farmers’ children in higher education.

He said he would sanction rehabilitation package to displaced farmers of Vamsadhara and Madduvalasa irrigation projects.

The PRP founder repeated the promises earlier made – like the 25 kg rice to all, provisions package, extending 50 per cent subsidy to domestic consumers in bill payments besides mentioning smaller issues like attending to transformer repairs.

Criticising the Rajasekhara Reddy government for making tall promises which were not implemented, and only 14 lakh acres were brought under cultivation in the four-and-a-half year rule, he said. Also, Dr. Reddy went against the advice of UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi with regard to allotment of fertile land for special economic zones. On top of this, the Government failed to supply quality seeds and thousands of ryots committed suicides, including in Dr. Reddy’s constituency of Pulivendula, he stated.

“If the farmers went on strike on the lines of industrial workers and other employees, millions will starve in the country,” he pointed out.

About 50,000 people gathered to listen to the mega star and utter chaos was witnessed at the venue of GMR College grounds. Police could not control party workers who broke the security cardon. They even entered the press gallery which led to the media persons vacating the place.

PRP leaders Kala Venkata Rao, Tammineni Sitaram, Gorle Haribabu and other local leaders were present.

Chiranjeevi will stay back tonight at Rajam and proceed to Visakhapatnam on Sunday.
