Chiru promises free houses to fishermen

Chiru promises free houses to fishermen Special Correspondent

ONGOLE: Praja Rajyam Party president Chiranjeevi has promised to provide free houses and free power to fishermen.

Interacting with select fishermen called to his camp at Kothapatnam, Mr Chiranjeevi said that Praja Rajyam Party if elected to power would take all steps for the welfare of fishermen. He said fishermen who die while fishing would be paid an ex gratia of Rs. 2 lakhs each.

Roadshow

He later touched Ethamukkala and other coastal villages before reaching Ongole for a roadshow. Though the crowds were poor in coastal villages, the cine actor was given warm reception in Ongole.

Addressing a meeting at Uppugundur later, Mr Chiranjeevi criticized the Congress Government for “letting down farmers badly”.

The Government was not able to supply quality power to farmers. Farmers had to go from pillar to post for fertilizers. After they produced the crop, they are not paid remunerative price.

He said that PRP was opposed to Special Economic Zones created for grabbing fertile lands.

Nostalgic moments for Chiru

ONGOLE: Praja Rajyam president K. Chiranjeevi faced a piquant situation here on Saturday as his alma mater had closed its gates on him. However, his teachers blessed him and wished that he would visit the college again as Chief Minister.

Mr. Chiranjeevi had studied Intermediate in C.S.R. Sarma College here during 1970-72. When he came to Ongole on Friday night as part of his four-day tour of Prakasam district, Mr. Chiranjeevi expressed a desire to visit the college and meet his teachers and classmates in a bid to go down the memory lane.

But he faced problems. The college management declined him permission on the plea that it would not like to “vitiate the academic atmosphere with politics”. The PR activists protested but to no avail.

Some teachers however volunteered to arrange the meeting just outside the college. Their efforts proved futile. As hundreds of people thronged the area, the private security threw up its hands and wanted Mr. Chiranjeevi to interact with his teachers in his vehicle itself.

On arriving at the college, Mr. Chiranjeevi turned emotional and became nostalgic. “The chemistry lab was on this side where I spilt hydrochloric acid on my favourite shirt and created a hole. Yes, the zoology lab was on this side where I dissected a cockroach and felt that I became a doctor.”

He recalled the days when he came to the college as an adolescent wearing pants for the first time. “Though I felt very important on that day, nobody took notice of me. It is really touching that so many people have come to welcome me today,” he said.

He invited his teachers by name for an interaction in his vehicle. Struggling through the crowd, they climbed the vehicle with great difficulty. The English teacher whose name also was Chiranjeevi felt glad that his student, K.S.S.V. (Konidela Siva Sankara Vara) Prasad had reached dizzy heights and wished that he would visit the college again as Chief Minister much to the merriment of the crowd.
