Praja Rajyam demands better price for sugarcane

Party holds Rytu Sadassu at Chodavaram

A large number of ryots from Chodavaram, Madugula attend the sadassu

Chiru will incorporate pro-farmer policies in party manifesto: Katyayani

VISKHAPATNAM: Praja Rajyam demanded the Government to declare a better price for sugarcane to help the farmers tide over their difficulties.

The price of Rs. 1,125 and Rs. 1,250 per tonne announced by the Tummapala and Chodavaram sugar factories would not help the farmers to meet even the production cost and the Government should announce the rate ranging between Rs. 1,500 and Rs. 1,800, demanded Praja Rajyam’s district and rural convenor and former MLA Ganta Srinivasa Rao at a Rytu Sadassu organised by the party at Chodavaram on Saturday.

A large number of sugarcane farmers from Chodavaram and Madugula Assembly constituencies attended the meeting.

The input costs like seed, fertilizers, wages for labour, transport, etc. had gone up making it unviable for the farmer to grow sugarcane, he said.

Mr. Srinivasa Rao also said the area under sugarcane had come down as the farmers found the crop un-remunerative with the low cost fixed by the Government against the high cost of production. This was also the reason for them switching over to alternate and profitable crops. Last year the Chodavaram sugar factory had recorded crushing of 5.75 lakh tonnes of sugarcane and this year it was doubtful if it could reach the four lakh tonne-mark as the production of sugarcane had come down. Farmers were always suffering but the Government would not come to their rescue, he said.

The Praja Rajyam leader also asserted that the party would win all the 15 Assembly seats and three MP seats in the next elections and Chiranjeevi would become Chief Minister.

Co-convenor of the rural unit of the party Katyayani said Mr. Chiranjeevi would certainly incorporate pro-farmer policies, like direct sale facility for farmers, etc. in the party’s manifesto.

Party leaders Yerra Patrudu, former Chairman of Chodavaram Sugar Factory, Donda Kannababu, Srinivasa Rao of Avanthi institutes, P. Venkateswarlu, Pappala Ramana Murthy, Eerla Sriramamurthy, Pakala Satyanarayana, G. Rambabu, Neelam Sarada and others also spoke.

The Praja Rajyam and the Congress organised their meetings in Chodavaram on the same day and were able to attract good gatherings. While the Praja Rajyam meeting was held in the Jawahar Club’s outdoor premises, the Congress conducted its programme in the junior college ground to mark the completion of the first phase of Padyatras. APCC president D. Srinivas, Ministers Konathala Ramakrishna, K. Rosaiah and Botcha Satyanarayana, party MLAs and other leaders attended.
