First list of PR candidates by month end

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: The Praja Rajyam party’s first list of about 50 contestants for the general elections is likely to be released by the month-end.

This was disclosed by party president K. Chiranjeevi while talking to reporters here on Monday.

Asked if he would fulfil the promise of according political recognition to all sections of society while distributing party tickets, he said it was the party’s prime focus to ensure social justice.

“We are committed to it. Though this will take time, we will do our best. The general elections will just be the beginning of the process,” he stated, adding that thus far, the party had been most pro-active in announcing what it would do to different sections of people if elected to power.

As for the process to select the right candidates, party political affairs committee chairman Ch. Harirama Jogaiah said a questionnaire was being circulated to the State and district party leaders so that they could gather basic information and fill them up with their observations.

‘Defeat of Congress imminent’

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council Dadi Veerabhadra Rao has said that rampant corruption, spiralling prices and breakdown of law and order in the Sate would spell doom for the Congress in the coming elections.

Participating in the discussion on the motion of thanks on the Governor’s address on Monday, Mr.Veerabhadra Rao said that the government had failed on all fronts. With the Congress turning politics into a business to amass wealth through commissions on every project, the demand for Congress tickets was increasing, he said. CPI member Puvvada Nageswara Rao said Left parties had supported the Congress in the last elections as it wanted to keep the BJP at bay and provide political stability based on Common Minimum Programme. But the Congress went back on the CMP and gave up its non-aligned external policy.

Chiranjeevi lambasts government for ‘shortcomings’

Town wears festive look as PRP cadre celebrate

GUNTUR: It was an endless wait for most of the youth and women at the NTR Statue centre on Monday evening to catch a glimpse of Praja Rajyam Party president Chiranjeevi.

There were people dangling perilously on the flex board railings, hanging on the staircase and some simply killing time by savouring the hot ‘mirchie bajji’ and gulping cups of tea.

As the road show inched towards the venue late in the night, crowds became hysterical. Youth began to honk horns and move about in autos belting out hit numbers of Chiranjeevi. “I saw Chiranjeevi after a gap of 16 years. I will not move until I see him again,” says Ankamma Rao, a clerk in a government department. He has been waiting to see his favourite matinee idol in flesh along with his family members.

It was some 16 years ago that Chiranjeevi set the town on fire with a mammoth public gathering at the Brahmananda Reddy Stadium celebrating the 100-day run of ‘Gharana Mogudu’.

But on Monday evening, one saw an astute Chiranjeevi slowly taking centre stage. Beginning his address with trademark thanksgiving statements for the love, affection and patronage showered on him for the last 30 years, he gradually raised the pitch and launched a vitriolic attack on the government. Stating that corruption was the biggest obstacle for development, he vowed in true filmi style that he would not sleep till he rooted out corruption. Training his guns on the Chief Minister, he challenged the government to list the number of projects completed as compared to the target.

Visits chilli yard

The PRP leader also mentioned the devastating fire accident in the chilli yard and said that it was a pity that the farmers had not got their due compensation. He also mentioned about the plight of cotton farmers who were unable to sell their stocks. Each time, the actor sought popular support, the crowds became hysterical.

The whole town wore a festive look as PRP cadre painted the town white, and giant banners were put up at vintage points.

The road show wound its way through the Hindu College centre, Kankaragunta bridge, Gujjangundla , Ring Road, Koretipadu.

Mr. Chiranjeevi was accompanied by urban convener Kilaru Rosaiah and corporator Sk. Showkath.

No section of society happy with Congress: PR

Staff Reporter

NIZAMABAD: Praja Rajyam spokesperson Parakala Prabhakar has said no section of society was happy and secure with the five-year rule of the Congress. They are waiting to give a fitting lesson to the ruling party in the elections.

Since Telugu Desam Party was weak and fell to a minority, it was not in a position to dethrone the Congress and it was only the Praja Rajyam led by Chiranjeevi which was poised to come to power with two-third majority in the Assembly, he said, addressing a press conference here on Monday.

Mr. Prabhakar who was here to discuss an action plan to constitute mandal and constituency-wise committees, said that a clear picture has emerged now on the strength of political parties. The TDP was a small party and it had become even smaller after the 2004 elections as it could win only 47 seats in the Assembly despite the nine-year rule.

After the elections, the parties in ‘ Mahakootami’ would get shattered and barring TDP, the others might sail with the Congress. It would not be a surprise even if the TDP joined hands with the Congress post elections to install the UPA government at the Centre, he opined.

Earlier, the Praja Rajyam leaders took out a motorcycle rally from Madhavnagar to Viceroy Gardens here.

PRP hits back at Nani

Staff Reporter

VIJAYAWADA: The Praja Rajyam Party urban leaders on Monday took strong objection to Kesineni Nani’s comment that the PRP was selling MLA and MP nominations like cinema tickets at theatres.

PRP spokespersons G. Samaram and Gundapu Chandrasekhar said Nani was making baseless allegations displaying lack of maturity and impatience on his part over the political developments. They said Nani had more money and he could have bought the party leadership, if his charge was correct.

Addressing a press conference here, Mr. Samaram and Mr. Chandrasekhar said that it was not on the consideration of riches but on social background that Nani was given the post of convener in the PRP. Now that Nani had exposed his real attitude, the PRP leadership dismissed him forthwith and this led to Nani making all sorts of unfounded allegations against Chiranjeevi.

The PRP leaders also refuted Nani’s charge that their party was paying Rs. 1.5 lakh a month to director Posani Krishna Murali towards his making controversial comments against rival leaders of the PRP. They asked Nani to clarify if he had paid any amount to the PRP leadership for getting the post of urban convener. It was only to balance social equations that Nani was given that post and he could not maintain decorum, they added.
