Protest over governments callous attitude in solving farmers problems

Happens so fast and in a dramatic fashion that police were caught unawares

Unique protest: Praja Rajyam activists dumping tomatoes on the main road in front of the State Assembly in Hyderabad on Thursday in support of tomato farmers.

HYDERABAD: Farmers from Chittoor district and Praja Rajyam activists dumped a lorry load of the tomatoes outside the Legislative Assembly gate to draw attention on the farmers problems.

They were protesting at the government s callous attitude in solving farmers problems while claiming to be farmer friendly Referring to the arguments of Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy and Opposition Leader N. Chandrababu Naidu they said the duo was wasting precious time of the Assembly time by trading charges about each others sons.

It all happened fast and in such a dramatic fashion that the police were caught unawares. However even as the tipper stopped between the two gates leading to the Assembly and unloaded its contents two constables clambered into the cabin and ensured that the driver drove to the nearest police station.

Most of the farmers were arrested within minutes of the incident that proved to be thoroughly embarrassing for the police who had thrown a security cordon around the Assembly Earlier too police stopped people who tried to sneak baskets full of the vegetable up to the Assembly premises in autorickshaws

Among those who were arrested were the party s Media Committee chairman T. Seshnarayan vice chairman A. Rajkumar film producer Tagore B. Madhu Reddy and Sarojini of the Mahila Rajyam.

ELURU: Members of the Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) district unit on Monday petitioned Collector G.Jayalakshmi seeking a common election symbol for the party in the coming general elections. They wanted the Collector to take their plea in this regard to the notice of the Chief Election Commission (CEC) of India.

The PRP district president K.P.N. Satyaprasad highlighted the need for the ECI to reconsider its earlier decision with regard to the PRP’s contention for a common symbol. The Commission has decided against the PRP’s plea on this score on the ground that the facility of common symbol could be extended to only recognised parties which got the previous history of contesting in the elections and meeting the ECI’s specifications in terms of securing the number of votes unlike in the case of PRP which was only a registered fledgling political outfit which was yet to face the elections.

Talking to the media, the PRP district chief however exuded confidence that the ECI would reconsider its ruling and issue a common symbol for its candidates fighting the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections in the State given its massive membership and huge turnouts attending the PRP meetings across the State. In the absence of common election symbol, confusion prevails among the voters while casting their vote as per their choice. “In one Lok Sabha seat like Eluru, the party will bear as many as eight election symbols — one for the Lok Sabha candidate and seven others for the Assembly seats in the absence of common election symbol. Think of the troubles associated with such party while electioneering for its candidates”, Dr. Satyaprasad explained. He also said the Anti-Defection Law would not be applicable to such candidates fighting the elections with different symbols from the same party in case of the defection. It may be recalled that the PRP had moved the High Court seeking a direction to the EC in favour of its demand.
