VIJAYAWADA: The city police took a 24-year old person into custody on the charges of duping a leader of the Praja Rajyam Party here on Saturday.
According to Governorpet police, Dasari Bala Prakash, a resident of Kunderu near Kankipadu, called on Chalamalasetti Ramesh Babu of Hanuman Junction claiming that he was closely associated with family members of PRP president Chiranjeevi. Bala Prakash reportedly told Ramesh Babu that he knew Chiranjeevi’s sister-in-law (wife of Nagendra Babu, younger brother of Chiranjeevi).
The accused convinced Ramesh Babu that Nagendra Babu’s wife would be able to persuade the PRP leadership to field him (Ramesh Babu) in elections. To substantiate his claim, he arranged a con woman to talk as Nagenedra Babu’s wife over phone with Rameh Babu. Later, he demanded Rs. 2 lakh for doing the favour. Following which, Ramesh Babu and Bala Prakash met in a private hotel here to discuss the matter.
Later, Ramesh Babu lodged a complaint with the police that Bala Prakash tried to cheat him. However, Bala Prakash did not accept the allegations levelled against him.
The police were inquiring into the incident.
